Helpful Heathen in the News
According to the Oregon newspaper the Curry Coastal Pilot, a driver who had been severely injured was discovered by a helpful Heathen who called the authorities on his cell phone and administered basic first aid while waiting for help.
How do we know he’s Heathen? Clifton Siple told the newspaper that he was also praying to Njord:
Siple, who was walking his Airedale terrier Dusty when he found Scott lying next to her car on the beach, said he was praying to Njord, the god of the sea, while awaiting rescuers.
“I was just praying to him, ‘hold the tide back a little bit longer so we can get Diane out of here,’” Siple said Friday.
Siple said he is a member of an old Germanic-Scandinavian religion called Asatru. “It’s not a mainstream religion. It’s being reconstructed from a thousand years ago. We’re not naked dancing in the woods,” he said.
Apparently the story has attracted wider interest: “Siple said since the rescue, he had done three interviews and had received calls from NBC’s Today Show and NBC’s Dateline.”
It was nice to see an ordinary person who happens to be Asatru in the news — a welcome break from the usual sensationalistic treatment in the media. It’s also nice to see an example of a Heathen virtue that doesn’t get as much press as the others:
No better burden can a man carry on the road
Than a store of common sense

“We’re not naked dancing in the woods.”
- Siple
We’re not? Hmm. I must have missed the memo.
*chuckle*
Seriously, it’s nice to see some positive press. Neutral reporting, without editorial bias. How refreshing!

I agree! Nice to have some press that doesn’t focus on prisons or Nazis.

I should probably add a comment that I think it’s great that we have an active prison ministry. The assumption that every prison convert/practitioner is a skin head is not.

I can vouch for Clif as both a common sense kind of guy and a good heathen, as he is a personal friend. I conducted his first blot for him in the back yard of his previous residence and have shared a few joyful horns of mead with him since then.
He just moved to the Oregon coast in October, and had told me he wanted to really become a part of the community there. Interesting how such words can take a somewhat ironic turn for an Odhinsman sometimes, but he has indeed shown himself of great value to both the local community and the heathen community at large by virtue of his down-to-earth responses to the media’s inquiries.
Hail, Clif, indeed!

Given that there is a rather sensationalist story about Asatru coming out of Chicago right now, I think we need to also circulate this story to as many true folk as we can. We need people to see that there are good stories too. Thank you for making this available.

Just a note - the link does not work directly. You can find it by doing an archive search however. Great story.

No, just an Outlaw and it gets old when 50% of those in the popular Media presented as Heathen ARE. The Ancestors would be sooo proud.

It is a wonderful change of pace to see something about Heathens in the news that doesn’t make me want to hide my face in shame.
Clif on 16 Nov 2007 at 10:13 pm #
Oh, all right, you can dance naked in the woods if you really want to…
I only said something to that effect because the reporter had never heard of Asatru, he assumed I’m Wiccan, and “dancing naked in the woods” is my usual reference to those of the Wiccan persuasion. I sure didn’t expect to see it in print.
Thanks for all the good words, folks.

Why is it stories like this always make me get a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes?
Huzzah for Clif and a pleasant media portrayal (for a change).
